Chittorgharh –
Chittorgarh resonates with stories of Rajputana bravery, pride and passion. Chittorgarh Fort has had a tumultuous past. This bastion of the Rajputs has faced violent attacks thrice in its entire history. The first was in 1303 when the Sultan of Delhi, Ala-ud-din Khilji, who was enamored by Queen Padmini, launched an attack to abduct her. More than two centuries later, in 1533, it was Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, who caused immense destruction. Four decades later, in 1568, Mughal Emperor Akbar attacked and seized the fort. It was finally in 1616, under the rule of Mughal Emperor Jahangir that the fort was returned to the Rajput’s.
Chittorgarh’s prized possession remains its mighty and majestic fort, which indeed is a fine example of Rajputana architecture. Sprawling in an area of 700 acres, and on a hillock at an elevation 180 m, this popular place to see has many historical stories of honorable Rajput women, sieges, chivalry and romanticism. Who will forget the painful sacrifice made by Rani Padmini and the ladies of court in the fort after a war was lost by their men.
And Mira Bai, who was a Hindu mystic poet and devotee of Krishna. She was one of the most significant Saints (“true” or “saints”) of the Vaishnava bhakti movement. Visit the Meera Bai Temple inside the Fort where one can feel the mystic charm of devotion and spirituality.
Kumbhalgharh –
It is a World Heritage Site included in Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Built during the course of the 15th century by Rana Kumbha, Kumbhalgharh is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the great king and warrior of Mewar.
